Kona Village 93.8 Weather Station

Pu‘uwa‘awa‘a, Hawai‘i

The Kona Village weather station is a cooperative station of the National Climatic Data Center, NOAA Satellite and Information Service. The station is located at an elevation of 20 feet (6.1 m) above sea level and has been in continuous operation since 1968. Precipitation is the only data available from the station.

Average annual precipitation for the site is 11 inches (279 mm). Metadata for the station and data records can be downloaded from the NCDC website listed above. We have made summary graphs, raw data, and other materials available for download below.

The first graph shows the total annual precipitation for Kona Village station for 38 years, from 1969 to 2007. The site is very dry. Rainfall can be extremely variable from year to year. In some years, total rainfall can be less than 2 inches (50 mm), while in wet years the total can be over 20 inches (500 mm). The second graph shows the average monthly rainfall for the same period. It is apparent that the summer months are considerably drier than the winter months and the dry season is long; starting early in the spring and extending long into the fall.

The downloadable file below contains copies of the graphs, the raw NCDC data files, metadata for the station, and some summary data we have prepared.
